Erinaceidae

Erinaceidae is a family in the order Eulipotyphla containing the hedgehogs and the gymnures, or moonrats. The hedgehogs, subfamily Erinaceinae, are native to Eurasia and Africa, while the gymnures, subfamily Galericinae, live in Southeast Asia. Members are generally shrew-like in build, with long snouts and short tails, ranging from about ten to forty five centimeters in body length; hedgehogs are distinguished by spines that are modified hairs, and both groups have five toes per foot and largely omnivorous diets of invertebrates. The family has changed little since it originated in the Eocene, retaining many ancestral placental mammal traits.
