Falconidae is a family of diurnal birds of prey comprising the falcons and caracaras, around 65 species in all, representing every extant species within the order Falconiformes. The family is made up of three subfamilies and is thought to have originated in South America during the Paleocene. It has a cosmopolitan distribution, absent only from the densest forests of central Africa, some remote oceanic islands, the high Arctic and Antarctica.
