Megadermatidae, the false vampire bats, is a small family of carnivorous bats found in Africa, Asia and Australia. Despite the common name, none of its members feed on blood; instead they prey on large insects, and the largest species also take small vertebrates such as frogs, lizards, birds and other bats. They have large ears joined at the base and, unlike many other bat families, lack a visible tail.
