Lyrebirds, family Menuridae, are ground-dwelling Australian passerines in the genus Menura, comprising two living species, the superb lyrebird and Albert's lyrebird. The superb lyrebird lives in rainforest from Victoria through Queensland, including Tasmania where it was introduced in the 19th century, while Albert's lyrebird is confined to a small area straddling New South Wales and Queensland. Among the largest songbirds in the world at 31 to 39 inches long, lyrebirds are renowned for exceptional vocal mimicry of natural and artificial sounds, and males perform elaborate courtship displays fanning out their lyre-shaped tail of sixteen modified feathers.
