Petromuridae is a family of hystricognath rodents known by the common name dassie rat, represented today by a single living species in the genus Petromus, found in southwestern Africa, alongside three extinct genera. Classified in the parvorder Phiomorpha with a fossil record extending from the Oligocene to the present, the dassie rat is the only extant member of its family.
