Ptilonorhynchidae

Bowerbirds, family Ptilonorhynchidae, are medium to large passerines comprising 23 species in eight genera, ranging in size from the 22 centimeter golden bowerbird to the 40 centimeter great bowerbird. They have an Australo-Papuan distribution, with ten species endemic to New Guinea, eight to Australia and two found in both, inhabiting rainforest, eucalyptus and acacia forest and shrubland across tropical and temperate zones. Males build and decorate elaborate structures called bowers, either maypole-style or avenue-style, with sticks and brightly colored objects to attract mates, among the most elaborate courtship behaviors known in birds.
