Bulbuls, family Pycnonotidae, are medium-sized passerine songbirds that also include the greenbuls, brownbuls, leafloves and bristlebills. The family contains 161 species across 28 genera, found through most of Africa and into the Middle East, tropical Asia as far as Indonesia, and north to Japan, with a few island populations in the Indian Ocean. African species tend to favor rainforest while Asian species generally prefer more open habitats.
