Ramphastidae

Ramphastidae is the toucan family of brightly marked Neotropical birds, placed in the suborder Pici of the order Piciformes, whose closest relatives are the toucan-barbets. It comprises five genera and more than 40 species, ranging from southern Mexico through Central America into South America as far south as northern Argentina. Toucans are best known for their large, often colorful bills, which in some large species measure more than half the length of the body yet remain very light, being made of bone struts filled with foam-like keratin; species range in size from the 130 gram lettered aracari to the 680 gram toco toucan, and the family fills an ecological role similar to that of hornbills in Africa and Asia through convergent evolution.
