Salmonidae is a family of ray-finned fish, the only living member of the suborder Salmonoidei, consisting of 11 living genera and over 200 species collectively known as salmonids, including salmon, trout, char, graylings, whitefishes, taimens and lenoks. These coldwater fish inhabit Northern Hemisphere waters and occupy mid-level trophic positions in subarctic and cool temperate aquatic systems, with the Atlantic salmon serving as the namesake for both the family and its parent order.
