Tapiridae

Tapiridae is a family of large herbivorous mammals in the order Perissodactyla, commonly known as tapirs, distinguished by a short prehensile nose trunk and a pig-like body shape. Only one living genus, Tapirus, remains, with four widely recognized species inhabiting the jungles and forests of South and Central America and of Southeast Asia. Tapirs have four toes on the front feet and three on the hind feet, an adaptation for walking on muddy or soft ground, and are largely nocturnal and crepuscular, feeding on fruit, berries, and leaves.
