Thamnophilidae

Antbirds, family Thamnophilidae, are a large passerine bird family found across subtropical and tropical Central and South America, from Mexico to Argentina, encompassing more than 230 species in around 63 genera under names including antshrikes, antwrens, antvireos, fire-eyes, bare-eyes and bushbirds. Most are small birds with rounded wings, strong legs and mostly somber grey, white, brown and rufous plumage, many with heavy, hook-tipped bills, and the highest species diversity is found in the Amazon basin, where up to 45 species can occur at a single site; some species follow army ant swarms to catch prey the ants flush out. Thirty-eight species are threatened with extinction, mainly from habitat loss and fragmentation.
