Thraupidae

Tanagers, family Thraupidae, form the second-largest family of birds, accounting for about 4 percent of all bird species and 12 percent of Neotropical birds. As of March 2025 the family held 393 species across 105 genera and 15 subfamilies. Tanagers are restricted to the Western Hemisphere and mainly to the tropics, with roughly 60 percent of species in South America and 30 percent of those in the Andes; most species have small ranges. They are small to medium-sized birds, from the 9 centimeter white-eared conebill to the 28 centimeter magpie tanager, often brightly colored though some are black and white, typically with males more vivid than females and juveniles.
