Tincidae

Tincidae is a family of freshwater and brackish water fish, order Cypriniformes, established as a distinct family in 1878 and monotypic, containing only the tench, Tinca tinca. The tench was first formally described as Cyprinus tinca by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 and was later reclassified into its own family after phylogenetic studies showed it did not belong within Cyprinidae or its related subfamilies. The species ranges across Eurasia, from Western Europe including Britain and Ireland eastward to the Ob and Yenisei Rivers in Asia and Lake Baikal, inhabits slow-moving freshwater with clay or muddy substrate and vegetation, and reaches a maximum length of about 70 centimeters.
