Tityridae

Tityridae is a family of suboscine passerine birds found in forest and woodland throughout the Neotropics, sometimes called tityras and allies since no single common name is widely used for the whole group. The family holds 37 species across seven genera, ranging in size from the buff-throated purpletuft, just 9.5 centimeters long and 10 grams, to the masked tityra, up to 24 centimeters and 88 grams; members are generally small to medium sized with relatively short tails and large heads. The family was formally named in 1840 by the ornithologist George Robert Gray, but its species were long classified within the tyrant flycatchers, manakins or cotingas until molecular and morphological studies confirmed them as a distinct lineage.
