Tyrannidae

Tyrant flycatchers, family Tyrannidae, are the largest family of birds in the world, with more than 400 species, specifically 441 species in 104 genera, found virtually throughout North and South America. They are the most diverse bird family in every country of the Americas except the United States and Canada, and show remarkable variation in shape, pattern, size and color, from the 6.5 to 7 centimeter short-tailed pygmy tyrant to the 29 centimeter great shrike-tyrant. The family belongs to the suborder Tyranni, the suboscines, which lack the elaborate vocal apparatus of songbirds.
