Allocebus

Allocebus is a genus of primate in the family Cheirogaleidae, order Primates, endemic to Madagascar, and contains a single species, the hairy-eared dwarf lemur (Allocebus trichotis), also called the hairy-eared mouse lemur, one of the least studied lemur species. Albert Gunther first described it in 1875 as Cheirogaleus trichotis within the dwarf lemur genus, and it was reclassified into its own genus, Allocebus, in 1967. The species was presumed extinct until it was rediscovered in 1989 in primary lowland rainforest in northeastern Madagascar. Its population, estimated at 100 to 1,000 individuals, is severely fragmented and declining across the northern and eastern rainforests where it lives, chiefly due to hunting, trapping, slash-and-burn agriculture and habitat fragmentation, and it is assessed as Endangered.
