Apatura is a genus of butterflies, family Nymphalidae, subfamily Apaturinae, commonly known as the emperors, comprising four current species: Apatura ilia, the lesser purple emperor, Apatura iris, the purple emperor, Apatura laverna, and Apatura metis, Freyer own purple emperor. Species in the genus are found across Eurasia, including Ukraine and Japan, and several formerly included species have since been reclassified into the related genera Chitoria and Mimathyma, reflecting ongoing taxonomic revision within the emperor butterflies.
