Aptenodytes is a genus of penguins, the great penguins, comprising two living species, the king penguin and the emperor penguin, and one extinct species. Molecular evidence indicates the genus split from the branch leading to all other penguins roughly 40 million years ago, making it basal to every other living penguin. The king penguin stands about 90 centimeters tall and weighs 11 to 16 kilograms, breeding on subantarctic islands between 45 and 55 degrees south, while the larger emperor penguin, standing about 122 centimeters and weighing 22 to 37 kilograms, has a circumpolar Antarctic distribution between 66 and 77 degrees south.
