Argynnis

Argynnis is a genus of butterflies, family Nymphalidae, commonly called fritillaries, comprising more than 50 species across three subgenera, Argynnis, Fabriciana and Speyeria, after recent taxonomic revisions consolidated several formerly distinct genera into Argynnis as junior synonyms. Species of the subgenera Argynnis and Fabriciana are found in Europe and Asia, while Speyeria species are widespread in North America and also occur in Europe and Asia. Well known species include the silver-washed fritillary, Argynnis paphia, the cardinal butterfly, Argynnis pandora, the great spangled fritillary, Speyeria cybele, the regal fritillary, Speyeria idalia, and the Diana fritillary, Speyeria diana.
