Barbonymus is a genus of ray-finned fish, family Cyprinidae, subfamily Cyprininae, established in 1999 by Kottelat with Barbus schwanenfeldii as the type species, containing 10 recognized barb species collectively called tinfoil barbs for their reflective, tinfoil-like scales. The genus occurs in Southeast Asian freshwaters, mangroves and estuaries, contains species formerly classified under the genera Barbus, Barbodes and Puntius, the last already live in this atlas, and the group is closely related to the common carp.
