Callorhinus

Callorhinus is a genus of fur seal, family Otariidae, whose only living species is the northern fur seal, Callorhinus ursinus; two extinct species, Callorhinus gilmorei and an unnamed form, are known from the Pliocene and earliest Pleistocene. The species name ursinus, Latin for bear-like, reflects the thick fur and large, strong build of adult males, which resemble bears when they emerge from the water, giving rise to the common nickname sea bear. Callorhinus may be a sister genus to the extinct giant otariid Thalassoleon.
