Cerdocyon

Cerdocyon is a genus of canid, family Canidae, whose only living species is the crab-eating fox, Cerdocyon thous, found across savannas, woodlands and subtropical forests of central South America from Colombia and southern Venezuela south to Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina. Predominantly greyish brown with black-tipped ears and tail, it is an opportunistic omnivore that forages for crabs on muddy floodplains in the wet season alongside rodents, birds, insects and fruit, and forms monogamous breeding pairs. The genus name combines Greek words for fox and dog; its closest living relative is thought to be the short-eared dog, and the IUCN lists the species as least concern.
