Civettictis is a genus of viverrid, family Viverridae, containing a single extant species, the African civet, native across Africa, plus two extinct relatives known from the fossil record, one of them from the Plio-Pleistocene of South Africa; the lineage extends from the Late Pliocene to the present. The African civet belongs to the subfamily Viverrinae alongside the genera Viverra and Viverricula, and phylogenetic study indicates Civettictis and Viverra diverged from a common ancestor roughly 12.3 million years ago.
