Cryptoprocta is a genus of carnivoran mammals, subfamily Euplerinae, family Eupleridae, endemic to Madagascar, comprising three species: the extant fossa, Cryptoprocta ferox, and two recently extinct relatives, Cryptoprocta spelea and Cryptoprocta bevatabe. The fossa is the largest of Madagascar's native mammalian carnivores and a generalist hunter capable of taking even the largest living lemurs, while the two extinct species were presumably adapted to hunting larger extinct lemurs that once populated the island.
