Danaus is a genus of butterflies in the tiger butterfly tribe, within the brush-footed family Nymphalidae, comprising 12 to 13 species depending on the taxonomic authority, with the monarch butterfly as its type species. Members are closely associated with milkweed plants, on which their caterpillars feed and from which they sequester toxic alkaloids, and the genus has a global range across North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Oceania.
