Eira

Eira is a genus of mustelid containing a single living species, the tayra (Eira barbara), an omnivorous carnivore native to the Americas. It resembles a large fisher or marten, though sleeker and more like a small wolverine, with a long agile body measuring 56 to 71 centimeters plus a bushy tail of 37 to 46 centimeters, and weighing 2.7 to 7.0 kilograms, with males larger than females. Its dark brown to black fur is marked by a yellowish or orange, individually distinctive patch on the chest, and tan or grayish fur on the head and neck. The tayra ranges across most of South America, except Chile, Uruguay, and most of Argentina, throughout Central America from Mexicos Tamaulipas and Veracruz south to Panama, and on Trinidad, favoring tropical and subtropical forest but also crossing grassland and farmland at night; seven subspecies are recognized across this range.
