Gadus is a genus of demersal fish, family Gadidae, established by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, commonly known as cod, comprising three recognized species: Gadus morhua, the Atlantic cod; Gadus macrocephalus, the Pacific cod; and Gadus chalcogrammus, the Alaska pollock. These bottom-dwelling fish are of major commercial importance; the Atlantic cod can reach up to 200 centimeters in length, weigh as much as 96 kilograms and live up to 25 years. Atlantic cod is classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, reflecting historical population collapses from overfishing, while Pacific cod and Alaska pollock remain unassessed.
