Garra

Garra is a genus of freshwater fish, family Cyprinidae, comprising more than 160 species, found primarily in Asia with roughly one-fifth of species from Africa, including East, Central and West Africa, with the highest African diversity in Ethiopia. Commonly called log suckers, or doctor fish for Garra rufa of Anatolia and the Middle East, members are slim cyprinids with flat bellies and sucking mouths, the lower lip expanded at its posterior rim to form a round or oval sucking pad; pectoral fins carry enlarged, typically unbranched first two rays, pharyngeal teeth are arranged in three rows, and the dorsal fin has 10 to 11 rays with the anal fin at 8 to 9 rays. The genus is benthic and generally cryptically colored, omnivorous, feeding on algae, plankton and small invertebrates, and six species are cave-adapted, lacking pigmentation, eyes, or both.
