Hyaena

Hyaena is a genus of hyenas, family Hyaenidae, containing a single living species, the striped hyena, Hyaena hyaena, found in a patchy distribution across North and East Africa, the Middle East, the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is the smallest of the bone-cracking hyenas, weighing 22 to 55 kilograms on average, is primarily a nocturnal scavenger though capable of killing prey, is unusual among hyenas for a monogamous social structure in which both parents raise cubs, and is listed as near threatened with fewer than 10,000 mature individuals estimated to remain.
