Lagenodelphis

Lagenodelphis is a monotypic genus of dolphin, family Delphinidae, containing the single species Lagenodelphis hosei, Fraser's dolphin or the Sarawak dolphin, found in deep waters mainly of the Pacific Ocean and to a lesser extent the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. The genus was established in 1956 when the naturalist Francis Fraser examined a skull found on a beach in Sarawak, Borneo in 1895 and concluded it resembled but did not match species in the genera Lagenorhynchus and Delphinus, so a new genus name was formed by merging the two; a complete specimen was not found until 1971.
