Lepilemur is the sole living genus of the family Lepilemuridae, a lineage of lemurs endemic to Madagascar known as sportive lemurs, comprising roughly 26 recognized species. They are medium-sized, strictly nocturnal and largely arboreal primates, measuring 30 to 35 centimeters in body length with a tail of similar length and weighing up to about 0.9 kilograms, with grey-brown to reddish fur above and pale underparts. The family was formerly named Megaladapidae until the extinct giant genus Megaladapis was reclassified elsewhere, and sportive lemurs move by powerful leaps and, on the ground, a kangaroo-like hop.
