Leptailurus

Leptailurus is a genus of the cat family Felidae, monotypic, with the serval, Leptailurus serval, as its sole member. A wild small cat native to Africa, widespread in sub-Saharan countries where it inhabits grasslands, wetlands, moorlands and bamboo thickets, and also found in North Africa in Morocco and Tunisia, the serval has a medium-sized, slender build standing 54 to 62 centimeters tall at the shoulder and weighing approximately 9 to 18 kilograms, with a small head, large ears, a spotted and striped golden-yellow coat, and the longest legs of any cat relative to its body size. A solitary carnivore active by day and night, it preys primarily on rodents, birds, frogs and reptiles, produces litters of one to four kittens after a two to three month gestation, and is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List and included in CITES Appendix II; three subspecies are recognized.
