Leptonychotes is a monotypic genus of true seal, family Phocidae, containing the single species the Weddell seal, a large and abundant seal with a circumpolar distribution surrounding Antarctica, including populations in the Weddell Sea and adjacent fast ice regions close to the Antarctic continent. It is one of the best-studied Antarctic seals because it inhabits fast ice environments near Antarctic research bases.
