Limenitis

Limenitis is a genus of butterflies, family Nymphalidae, commonly called admirals, comprising 25 species found across North America, Europe and Asia, organized into groups including the North American Basilarchia group, an eastern Asian helmanni group, and further ungrouped Asian and European species. The genus name derives from Neo-Latin for of harbours, tracing to an Ancient Greek root. Well known species include the viceroy, Limenitis archippus, ranging from northwestern territories through central Mexico and notable for mimicking the monarch butterfly; the American white admiral or red-spotted purple, Limenitis arthemis, found from New England to Canada; Lorquin's admiral, Limenitis lorquini; Weidemeyer's admiral, Limenitis weidemeyerii, of western North America; the poplar admiral, Limenitis populi, widespread across continental Europe and Asia; and the southern white admiral, Limenitis reducta, of central and southern Europe and western Asia.
