Lupulella is a genus of canid found in Africa, comprising two living species, the black-backed jackal and the side-striped jackal. Both were formerly classified in the genus Canis, until a 2017 taxonomic review found DNA evidence that they form a distinct lineage outside the Canis, Cuon and Lycaon clade and recommended their placement in the separate genus Lupulella, a change the American Society of Mammalogists adopted; a 2019 workshop hosted by the IUCN Species Survival Commission Canid Specialist Group endorsed the same reclassification.
