Megaptera

Megaptera is a monotypic genus in the rorqual family Balaenopteridae, containing a single living species, the humpback whale. Adults range from 14 to 17 meters in length and weigh up to 40 metric tons, with long pectoral fins and tubercles on the head, and are known for breaching and other surface behaviors as well as complex songs produced by males lasting 4 to 33 minutes. Found in oceans worldwide, humpback populations migrate seasonally between polar feeding grounds and equatorial breeding areas, and have recovered from around 5,000 individuals during the whaling era to roughly 135,000 today, now listed as Least Concern.
