Melanosuchus is a genus of caiman in the subfamily Caimaninae of family Alligatoridae, containing one living species, the black caiman, native to the Amazon basin of South America, and one extinct species, with a fossil record extending back to the Late Miocene roughly 11.6 million years ago. The black caiman is the largest living member of the subfamily Caimaninae and of the entire family Alligatoridae; the genus name derives from Ancient Greek words for black and crocodile.
