Natrix

Natrix is a genus of snakes, subfamily Natricinae, family Colubridae, order Squamata, comprising five living species along with at least five extinct species known from the fossil record. Commonly called grass snakes and water snakes, Natrix species are non-venomous colubrids found mainly across Eurasia, with some populations extending into North Africa and Egypt; their range spans mainland Europe from Scandinavia to southern Italy and reaches into the Middle East and Central Asia. Members of the genus are adapted to aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats across temperate Eurasian and Mediterranean environments. The genus includes the grass snake, Natrix natrix; the barred grass snake, Natrix helvetica; the dice snake, Natrix tessellata; the viperine water snake, Natrix maura; and the Iberian grass snake, Natrix astreptophora.
