Phoxinus

Phoxinus is a genus of freshwater fish, family Leuciscidae, order Cypriniformes, the only genus in the subfamily Phoxininae, commonly called Eurasian minnows, with the type species Cyprinus phoxinus. The genus spans Eurasia and comprises 21 recognized species, including the Eurasian or common minnow, Phoxinus phoxinus, the Pyrenean minnow, Phoxinus bigerri, and the Balkhash minnow, Phoxinus poljakowii; its fossil record extends from the early Oligocene to the present. North American species formerly classified within Phoxinus were later recognized as the distinct genus Chrosomus.
