Physeter is a genus of toothed whales in the family Physeteridae, containing a single living species, the sperm whale, along with several fossil species of disputed validity. The genus name derives from the Ancient Greek word for blowpipe or blowhole. Sperm whales spend more than 72 percent of their time in foraging dive cycles, using echolocation and efficient locomotion to hunt at depth.
