Plecturocebus

Plecturocebus is one of three genera of titi monkey, a group of New World primate in the subfamily Callicebinae of the family Pitheciidae, order Primates, formally described in 2016 by Byrne and colleagues based on molecular phylogenetic evidence, with the type species Cebus moloch, now Plecturocebus moloch, the red-bellied titi monkey. Historically all titi monkeys were classified in a single genus, Callicebus, until the 2016 revision split them into three genera: Plecturocebus for Amazonian and Chaco titis, Cheracebus for widow titis, and Callicebus sensu stricto for Atlantic Forest titis. The genus name derives from the Greek plektos, meaning twist or plait, oura, meaning tail, and kebos, meaning long-tailed monkey, referring to the titi habit of intertwining tails when sitting together. Plecturocebus contains 25 species and is distributed across the Amazonian and Chaco regions of South America.
