Polygonia

Polygonia is a genus of butterflies, family Nymphalidae, commonly called commas or anglewings, comprising approximately 17 species found across the Northern Hemisphere in North America, Europe and Asia. Members are distinguished by conspicuous angular notches on the outer edges of the forewings and a conspicuous white, comma-shaped mark on the underside of each hindwing that gives the group its common name; many species hibernate as adults, an unusual survival strategy among butterflies. Well known species include the comma butterfly, Polygonia c-album, the question mark, Polygonia interrogationis, the eastern comma, Polygonia comma, and the Asian comma, Polygonia c-aureum.
