Protoxerus, the African giant squirrels, is a genus of squirrel in the subfamily Xerinae, found only in Africa. It contains two species placed in separate subgenera, the forest giant squirrel, also called Stanger's squirrel, in the subgenus Protoxerus, and the slender tailed squirrel in the subgenus Allosciurus. The genus was established by Forsyth Major in 1893, with Sciurus stangeri designated as its type species.
