Serinus is a genus of small finches, family Fringillidae, comprising eight species found across West Asia, Europe and Africa, typically displaying yellow plumage; the genus name derives from Neo-Latin for canary-yellow. Around 2012, phylogenetic study showed the older, broader Serinus was polyphyletic, and a larger African and Arabian clade was reassigned to the resurrected genus Crithagra, leaving Serinus restricted to the European serin and seven related species.
