Solenopsis

Solenopsis is a genus of ants, family Formicidae, subfamily Myrmicinae, tribe Solenopsidini, commonly called fire ants for their painful sting, comprising over 200 species, 201 by one count, with the type species Solenopsis geminata. The genus has global representation and includes species commonly called ginger ants and tropical fire ants; the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is a prominent invasive pest in the United States, Australia, China and Taiwan, while the genus own native range extends to South America and other tropical regions. Members possess a pedicel with two nodes, an unarmed propodeum, and antennae with 10 segments plus a two-segmented club.
