Terrapene is the genus of North American box turtles, subfamily Emydinae, family Emydidae, land turtles that are members of the American pond turtle family despite their superficial resemblance to tortoises in terrestrial habits and overall appearance. The genus comprises seven recognized species, Terrapene carolina, Terrapene triunguis, Terrapene coahuila, Terrapene mexicana, Terrapene nelsoni, Terrapene ornata and Terrapene yucatana, further subdivided into twelve taxa, distinguished by domed shells with a hinged bottom that lets the animal retract completely for protection.
