Tor

Tor is a genus of freshwater ray-finned fish, family Cyprinidae, comprising 16 currently recognized species, commonly called mahseers, with this genus distinguished as the true mahseer, found across Asia. Established by J. E. Gray in 1833 with Tor hamiltonii as the type species, members are identified by the presence of a median lobe on the mandible or lower lip, a feature that distinguishes them from related genera such as Naziritor and Neolissochilus. Notable species include Tor putitora, the Himalayan mahseer, Tor khudree, the black mahseer, Tor tambroides, the Malayan mahseer or empurau, and Tor tor, the red-finned mahseer.
