Trachemys is a genus of turtles in the family Emydidae, commonly called sliders, comprising 16 living species plus two known only from fossils, with a fossil record extending back to the Late Miocene. The genus is native to the Americas, ranging from the midwestern United States south to northern Argentina, though one subspecies, the red-eared slider, has achieved a global distribution through introduction worldwide.
