Tursiops is a genus of dolphins, family Delphinidae, known as the bottlenose dolphins, comprising three species currently recognized by the Society for Marine Mammalogy: the common bottlenose dolphin, the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin and Tamanend's bottlenose dolphin, found in warm and temperate seas worldwide except the Arctic and Antarctic. Members have an elongated rostrum with 18 to 28 conical teeth per side of each jaw, average around 300 kilograms and just over 4 meters in length, and carry an encephalization quotient of about 5.26, higher than that of chimpanzees.
