Varecia

Varecia, the ruffed lemurs, is a genus in the family Lemuridae comprising two species, the black-and-white ruffed lemur and the red ruffed lemur, found only on Madagascar. They are the largest extant lemurs in the family, with a head and body length of 43 to 57 centimeters, a total length of 100 to 120 centimeters and weight of 3.1 to 4.1 kilograms, distinguished by a long canine-like muzzle with a pronounced overbite and furry ruffs running from the ears to the neck, white in the black-and-white species and reddish in the red species. Ruffed lemurs are diurnal, arboreal and highly vocal, the most frugivorous of Madagascar's lemurs, and live in multi-male, multi-female groups with a fission-fusion social structure.
